About

Helmsdale is a is a picturesque village located on the east coast of Sutherland in the Highland council area of Scotland. It is famous for its salmon fishing and scenic harbour, which thrived during the herring boom of the 19th Century.

Steeped in history, Helmsdale was originally planned in 1814 to resettle communities displaced during the Highland Clearances.

It is also home to Timespan Heritage Centre, which boasts a local history museum, contemporary art gallery, archive centre, geology gardens and a river cafe, and welcomes 20,000 visitors each year.

How to get here

By Car:

We are located on the famous North Coast 500 route. Just off the A9, approximately 68 miles north of Inverness.

By Train:

There are regular train services from Inverness to Helmsdale via Scotrail, which takes approximately 2 hours 30 minutes.

By Bus:

The Service X99 | Travel from Inverness to Scrabster | Stagecoach runs between Helmsdale and Inverness, with several buses running daily.

Parking on Games Day is very limited at Couper Park. There are many on-street options for parking in the village, and it is a short walk up to the Park.
